Ford Developing Cheaper Hybrid Engine

What happens when you combine two electric motors linked to a gas engine? You get a more powerful, more cost effective, hybrid powertrain. Ford is currently working on a new hybrid powertrain for their new Ford Fusion which will produce more miles per gallon in output than their preceding model, while costing less.
The new hybrid system "will cost 30 percent less"1 utilizing two electric motors in powering the car. One of the powertrain hybrid engines will be used as a power generator while the other will be used solely to drive the car. Combined with the two electronic engines is a gas engine via a "torque-split device" which diverts power between the gas and the electric motors acting as a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Although it is rumored that the new powertrain could come to market as soon as next year, Vollman Ford in Portland, MI expects that the project will undergo more testing and won't be available at least before 2014 - 2015.
